ABSTRACT

Abstract: Mycological examination is still the cornerstone for the diagnosis of onychomycosis for many dermatologists, but sampling technique interferes on its sensitivity and specificity. Nail abrasion may be used to reach the most proximal part of the lesion and can be easily accomplished with an electric abrasor. We suggest nail plate dermoscopy to identify the best location for localized abrasion to obtain adequate samples for mycological examination.

ABSTRACT

Onychomatricoma is a benign neoplasia that occurs pecifically in the nail apparatus. It was described in 1992, and is the only tumor in which the change of the nail plate is actively caused by the lesion. It lies in the nail matrix, and has fingerlike projections that are embedded in the nail plate, resulting in thickening, longitudinal grooves, yellow discoloration and splinter hemorrhages. Although described as a rare tumor, it is believed to be underdiagnosed. The present study is aimed at reviewing onychomatricoma's clinical features as well as the complementary examinations that are used to recognize and diagnose this tumor.

ABSTRACT

The glomus tumor is an uncommon benign neoplasm of glomus cells. In the majority of the cases it is presented as a solitary painful papule in the subungual region. We report a rare case of a patient with two individual synchronous glomus tumors under the nail bed of the same finger.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Patients presenting with plantar puncture wounds with presence of foreign bodies are treated in emergency departments, dermatology and orthopedic clinics. The clinical features of these lesions are rarely cited in journals and textbooks of dermatology. We report a case of foreign body in the plantar surface of the foot, in which clinical history and dermatological examination were decisive for the diagnosis.
